HGTV approached us to collaborate on the architectural design for the HGTV Urban Oasis® 2018 house. This existing 1912 Dutch Colonial was completely renovated and given a spacious 1000 sf rear modern addition. The front of the home retains much of its historic character, with the original gambrel roof shape and front porch. Just inside the front door is the traditional parlor with pocket doors and Rookwood tile fireplace. The design becomes more modern and open as one moves through the first floor to the rear of the building. The new open-plan living area in the rear connects to the spacious back yard, new patio, and trellis. The upper floor of the addition features a new master suite with generous windows, a big soaking tub, and walk-in closet. Collar ties (roof joists) are left exposed in both the new and existing areas of the upper floor- a design feature which connects the new with the old.
The home was boldly styled by Brian Patrick Flynn of HGTV and their sponsors for its debut on the national stage. It was an honor to take part in such an exciting high-profile project, especially one which celebrates design in our home town of Cincinnati.
